Connecting Students in Arkansas with Rewarding Careers in Healthcare

The Life of a Laboratory Professional

This week’s ArkansasHealthCareers.com video is a profile of Lorraine Frierson. She is the Clinical Lab Director at AHEC South Arkansas in El Dorado, AR. In the video she tells us all about working in a clinical laboratory.

The Medical Lab Technicians and other lab staff are responsible for obtaining a variety of body fluid samples, analyzing those samples, and delivering results to physicians and nurses. As Lorraine sees it, the lab staff members serve as critical liaisons between patients and healthcare providers. Without accurate testing of body fluids, a physician cannot properly diagnose what’s wrong with a person.

Check out the video below to find out more about Lorraine and the career of a Medical Lab Technician.

I’m already a Nationally licenced Phlebotomist and I want to know what is my next step in the lab. Is it lab technologist or what. Please e-mail me some info thank you Antwion.

The next step after phlebotomy is either that of a two year degree as a Medical Lab Technician or a four year degree as a Medical Technologist. A four year degree can be expanded into specialty areas such as Cytology, Hematology, or even phorensics. It is up to you how far you wish to take it.
